Byōdō-in is a Buddhist temple established by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in 1052, at the end of the Heian period, in the city of Uji in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The most famous building is the Phoenix Pavilion or Amida Pavilion, whose construction was completed in 1053. The previous owner, Minamoto no Tōru, used the building as a country residence. The other buildings attached to the temple were destroyed during the civil war in 1336. The temple was notably the site of the first battle of Uji, in 1180, which was at the beginning of the Gempei war.
