The hakama is a traditional Japanese garment, often associated with samurai attire and martial arts such as aikido, kendo, or kyudo. It is a loose-fitting, pleated trouser, usually worn over a kimono. It is distinguished by its seven pleats, five in the front and two in the back, which symbolize bushido virtues such as benevolence, loyalty, and honor.

Historically, the hakama was worn by nobility and warriors during Japan's feudal era. Originally, it was used to protect the legs when traveling on horseback, but it became a symbol of elegance and refinement in various formal practices.

The hakama is attached to the waist by cords called "himo", and its wearing requires special know-how to properly adjust the folds and fasteners. Although traditionally worn by men, it is now also worn by women, especially during formal ceremonies such as weddings and graduations.

Today, the hakama remains an emblematic piece of Japanese culture, symbolizing both discipline, tradition and respect for ancient codes.
